While they do eventually become friends, it's a later transition than expected and their relative hostility towards each other is surprising. The relationship between Gratuity 'Tip' Tucci ( Rihanna) and the bumbling Oh (Jim Parsons) is an initially abrasive one. I hope it is intentionally about those things, because otherwise it is awfully cavalier about the onscreen actions that take place over the course of the 85-minute movie.
It also may operate, intentional or not, as a metaphor for the Japanese internment camps and/or the European slave trade. The film operates as a road trip character comedy between an invading alien and a young girl who got separated from her mother during the initial displacement. The film zooms by so quickly, with only slightly less momentum than the too-fast Penguins of Madagascar, that said subtexts are offered in a random shot or a random line of dialogue. To wit, the story of Home seems to wobble between glossing over some rather horrifying material and subtly suggesting some profound subtexts. I have not read that book, but I am curious to do so after seeing this feature film adaptation. It is based on The True Meaning of Smekday by Adam Rex, and it will be distributed by 20th Century Fox. Astle and Matt Ember (both of whom wrote Blue Sky's Epic) and directed by Tim Johnson ( Over the Hedge, Sinbad, Antz, and that Kung Fu Panda holiday special I'm always raving about). But it is not the new classic that (I would argue) DreamWorks needed right now.ĭreamWorks Animation's Home is written by Tom J. Home is a good movie and an entertaining bit of kid-friendly animation. I merely thought The Croods was "pretty good" in 2013 and it earned $587m worldwide, becoming DWA's second-biggest non-sequel hit after Kung Fu Panda. I'll happily eat crow, with said Mea Culpa on the Forbes front page, if something similar happens here. The bad news is that, all due respect to the filmmakers who didn't ask for nor deserve this additional pressure, "pretty good" isn't good enough at this juncture. The good news is that Home is pretty good, and artistically it's one of their better non-sequels of late. Point being, DreamWorks has been playing defense since late 2012, right as they were attempting to diversity their profit streams and "celebrate" their 20th anniversary (the company was founded in 1994).
